[net.aviation] Hitching a ride

One way to get to ride in military aircraft is if you
are an ACTIVE member of Civil Air Patrol. One of the
little known "bennies" is that with competent Air Force
orders, you get to ride on military airplanes. In the
last three years, I have ridden on KC-135s, C-130s, T-43s,
and a C-118. Several of my cadets have ridden in a T-37.
I am negotiating a ride in an F-16B for later this summer.

Another way is if you are an accredited journalist. The
public affairs offices of the Air Force have amazing powers
to get rides for people.

Good luck

Another (very restricted way) to ride in a jet: when the Air Guard
in Springfield, IL, got their first F-4's, the governor was given
a ride in one. I tried for years to get my dad to take me up in
one (he was an instructor with the Guard for ~20 years), but he
never would. I'd say your best bet would be to sign up with your
state Air National Guard as a "weekend warrior." You wouldn't be
flying the newest and fastest planes, but they do use jets --
Illinois has had F-4's for more than ten years now.
