The benson gyroccopter does indeed have a bad reputation in flying circles. I do not believe that this is an inherent problem with the machine, or its design, but rather with the people building, and flying them. 1) Since power is derived from a pancake four, there is a great tendancy to use a volkswagen engine. This is O.K. if ALL of the proper modifications are made. these include a) new bearings which can take the thrust and vibration. b) hi-per. cranks, rods, and pistons. c) replacing the ignition system with dual magnetos. d) new heads which are A.V. rated. 2) You can't expect to just get in and fly. Gyrocopters are very squirly beasts, especially on landing since ground effects work against you in stopping your rotors, rather than for you as with a fixed wing craft. Along this line Dual instruction IS A MUST. What it basically boils down to is this. Flying is a very expensive hobby. Don't expect to use a gyro for bargain basement flight, you will get hurt. When your life depends on your craft, and your skill make sure both are the best they can be. Don't skrimp on components, and get the proper training, and a gyro can be a blast, with their STOL capabilities, and their turn on a dime maneuverability they can be very satisfying. Treat them right and they will return the favor. "Don't fly junk higher than you want to fall" Randy More ..!ihnp4!afinitc!rkm
