To some, the ritual of cutting off the shirt tail (or tie) may seem a bit foolish (and perhaps it is). But there is something very symbolic about this ritual that says to the student "this is a special day, this is a special event". Perhaps it signifies that the person has now "joined the fraternity" and is one of a select group. If you have ever crossed the equator on board a ship, you will certainly discover that some folks take rituals very seriously. For myself, I have a box full of shirt tail clippings that go back over 13 years ago, and at the bottom of the box is my own shirt tail. I try never to mention the ritual to the student prior to the solo, I just whip out a pair of scissors after all the dust has settled and snip away. I cut off three parts. One part for the student, which I sign and date. One part for the flight school wall (when I was working at a flight school) One part for my collection, that the student signs and dates. Some students buy a small 5X8 frame and mount the shirt tail and a picture of them standing with the airplane (and occasionally the instructor). nuff said. About simulators... I have been using a Pacer MkII for six years and I don't think an instructor can efficiently or economically teach instruments without one. I have never used the video programs although I do have one for my Robin PC that I looked at once and decided that the Pacer was far superior. I would be glad to share any of my knowledge or experience with anyone....if I could only figure out how to route mail over the net. My addresses are not being accepted by my node. Ted
