[net.aviation] Radio Controlled Models, info needed

fitz@utastro.UUCP (Mike Fitzpatrick) (06/18/84)

I finally got some extra cash, and it's time to indulge
myself a bit. I've been interested in radio controlled airplanes
ever since I was a kid and have recently started thinking about getting
one. Does anyone have any pointers on what sort of prices or particular
models are best?? I know a little about flight principles, but any
flying tips would also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for *any* information.

(1) Join the AMA (insurance).

(2) Get some current Modeling Magazines (Radio Controled Models, Model
Airplane News) and look at the adds for the Mail-order houses, (Hobby Shack
in California, and Hobby-Lobby in Tenn seem to have the best prices).

(3) Find where the local folks fly, go there and ask questions.

(4) *DON'T* start out with a high powered pattern/scale job, get a slow
forgiving trainer. In fact if you have any decient hills get a
rudder/elevator medium sized sailplane and start with slope soaring.
In fact don't even bother with power, get into soaring (no greasy
engines, no barked fingers, no noise).

(4a)If you do get into soaring join the League of Silent Flight.

(5) There is no 5.

(6) You don't really need a umpteen channel radio 4 is plenty for almost
anything (you only need 2/3 for soaring).

(7) Have fun, even power is a real kick (soaring, of course, is even more fun).
