[net.aviation] Enola Gay, museums, etc.

There seems to be some confusion over aircraft museums and displays.
Wright-Patterson AFB may have the best collection of US military
aircraft, but the National Air and Space Museum is part of the
Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Also, I believe the Enola Gay B-29
is in the Smithsonian's collection. When I toured their aircraft
restoration facility in Silver Hill, Maryland, in 1976, I
seem to remember being told that the Enola Gay was in storage
at Silver Hill, disassembled. There seemed to be some concern
over how to display the aircraft, and whether or not such a
display would seem to glorify the first use of nuclear weapons
against civilians. Also, I suppose there is the question of
space - a B-29 isn't small.
